Palohan – Inculcating The Attitude Of Gratitude

Indulge in a short story that takes you back to your school days, re-learn the need to be thankful in life, and count your blessings with Palohan – a 5 minutes meditation to inculcate the attitude of gratitude. An Unusual Surprise Test A professor asked his students to prepare for a surprise test. The students waited anxiously for the test to begin. The professor handed out the question paper with the text facing down, as always, and asked the students to begin. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot somewhere around the bottom of the page. The professor then said, “I want you to write about what you see there.” The students were confused and they got started on the task.  At the end of the class, the professor collected the papers and started reading each one of them in front of all the students. All of them without any exception described the black dot, trying to explain its position on the paper. In the end, the classroom went silent, and then finally the professor explained.  “You will not be graded on this, I just wish to give you something to think about. Not one student wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone chose to focus on the black dot and the same thing happens in our lives. Our life is a special gift, and we always have reasons to celebrate. And yet we focus on the dark spots in our life. We tend to focus on health issues, financial issues, relationship issues, disappointments in social life, etc.” The professor continued, “the dark spots are very tiny compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that spoil our minds. You can choose to look away from the black spots in your life. We each have so many things to be grateful for. Be grateful and enjoy each moment of your life.” The Science Of Gratitude Research suggests that gratitude is associated with many benefits for individuals, including better physical and psychological health, increased happiness and life satisfaction, and decreased materialism. When our thoughts shift from negative to positive, there is a surge of feel-good hormones in our system – dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin.  Gratitude can also be used as an effective antidote for stress and anxiety. However, we humans naturally have a negativity bias, and building a positive outlook takes deliberate effort and consistency. And that’s where Palohan comes in.
